Walk With Me

In January, 2013 I was asked by my niece Amanda to compose and perform a song for her wedding. I usually decline such requests, because they matter, and I don’t want to be That Guy, the one on the wedding video thirty years from now that everyone fast forwards past.

I can’t say no to Amanda, though. Just can’t.

The song is called “Walk With Me”. The imagery for the lyrics, which are written below the video, comes from emails I got from both Amanda and her husband Matthew, telling me stories about their courtship. In many ways, this song is more their’s than any other song I’ve ever written.

(The church is one of the most acoustically challenging spaces I’ve ever performed in. If you can adjust the tone of your speakers, turn the bass down and the treble up.)

Walk With Me

William Morris, 2013/06/09

I am standing on a mountaintop
I can hear your name whispered on the wind
Just for a moment, I thought I heard you saying,
“What a beautiful hurricane it’s been.”

Like a weary traveller who finally sees the sunrise
How new this world seems today.
How easily you taught me to see with new eyes:
See through the fog, see colors in the gray.

refrain
Walk with me, I’ve dreamed of you forever
Dressed all in your finest, candlelight and family,
You see me like no other, I’m a hero in your eyes.
My love, my love, walk with me.

It was in the music, in the violins and voices,
Like an unexpected treasure from a place I thought I knew.
Sitting side by side, flying high above your mountain,
Caught by surprise by the music and by you.

You give me courage to go another mile,
A gentle wind behind me, turning me ‘round.
The top of the world is well within my reach,
and I’m warmed by the fire I’ve found.

refrain
Walk with me, I’ve dreamed of you forever
Dressed all in your finest, candlelight and family,
You see me like no other, I’m an angel in your eyes.
My love, my love, walk with me.
